“Measure what is measurable and make measurable what is not so.”

Don’t just look at the numbers, use them to drive the business. Use them to facilitate meetings (when meetings are actually necessary,) and use them to challenge yourself and your team. Always ask why?

Don’t measure everything! Measure what is currently important, or will be important in the short-term. Ask yourself, will anybody take action on this data? Will anybody’s behavior or decisions change?

Metrics allow people to manage themselves–they are empowered. Hand them a number, and ask them to wake up every day and improve that number — great things will happen.
